Celebrating EveryStep Nurses: Meet Stephanie Birt

Stephanie Birt has been a nurse with EveryStep’s Community Home Visitation program in Des Moines for over three years and says she has “loved every minute of it.” The strength of her team is one reason she looks forward to work each day.

“The team I work with is absolutely incredible,” says Stephanie. “We all share the same mission to serve others, and we respect and care for each other in the process. There is a quote that says ‘The strength of the team is each individual member. The strength of each member is the team.’ EveryStep makes a difference in the lives of others because we have a compassionate team of people who truly love what they do.”

A graduate of Woodard-Granger High School, Stephanie received her associate degree from DMACC and her bachelor’s degree in nursing from Grandview University. As a community home visitation nurse, she works closely with new parents and their families. “I have a passion for community and public health focusing on the mother and baby,” says Stephanie, who credits the positive attitude of her EveryStep team with keeping her motivated and encouraged.

Stephanie and her family live just north of Woodward on a farm. Her husband teaches and coaches at Woodward-Granger and they have four boys, ages 18, 16, 14 and 4. She says any free time she has is happily spent running after her children’s passions. “These involve dirt bike racing, showing pigs and basically anything that involves dirt they can track into my house!” Rounding out the family are two dogs (Addie and Layla), chickens, one turkey (Tilly), four goats and show pigs. “It’s basically a zoo,” laughs Stephanie.

Stephanie loves what she does and feels lucky to have found her passion. “I thank God every day for the opportunity to do what I do. I have always said when I get up in the morning, I don't feel like I'm going to work,” says Stephanie. “I get to hang out with people that I love being around doing what I love to do with moms, babies and families. I am truly blessed.”

National Nurses Week, first observed in 1994, honors the contributions and sacrifices of the medical professionals who keep us healthy. It is celebrated between May 6, National Nurses Day, and May 12, the birthdate of celebrated nurse Florence Nightingale.

EveryStep is fortunate to have dedicated and talented nurses who work with expectant and new mothers and their children, individuals in the care of EveryStep Hospice, and seniors and others that receive home care services through EveryStep.
