EveryStep Breaks Ground on Community Garden

Thanks to the help of the Greater Des Moines Partnership DSM Fellowship Program, EveryStep's Community Garden is off to a fruitful start!

Last week, five members of the DSM Fellowship Program donated their time to construct several raised gardens at EveryStep's Bright Kavanagh Center at 3000 Easton Blvd. in Des Moines. The raised bed gardens will soon be planted with a variety of vegetables and herbs.

EveryStep's Community Garden was developed with the aim to make nutritious food available to new mothers and children who are participants in the organization's Stork's Nest program

Stork's Nest is an educational incentive program. Participants earn points for healthy behaviors such as keeping medical appointments, WIC participation, breastfeeding and school attendance. These points may be redeemed at the Stork's Nest for needed baby items such as diapers, clothing, strollers, cribs and car seats.

The garden will also serve as a way to bring together a diverse group of people to work and learn about gardening, cooking with fresh produce, and environmental stewardship. To learn more about the EveryStep Community Garden, contact Cindy Winn at cwinn@everystep.org
