November 29, 2018 Celebrating & Supporting Family Caregivers

Honoring family caregivers is a tradition that began in the mid-1990s. In his 2012 presidential proclamation of November as National Family Caregivers Month, President Barack Obama stated: "Across America, daughters and sons balance the work of caring for aging parents with the demands of their careers and raising their own children. Spouses and partners become caregivers to the ones they love even as they navigate their own health challenges. All of them give selflessly to bring comfort, social engagement, and stability to those they love. National Family Caregivers Month is a time to reflect on the compassion and dedication that family caregivers embody every day."

November 19, 2018 A Story from Our Hospice Program: Danny Davis

Danny Davis' life has been full of adventure and travel, from rural Missouri to Japan and Germany. Now, the Marine Corp veteran and his wife, Nancy, call Des Moines home, but home is more than just a place, it's the people there. For Danny and Nancy their home includes nurse Brittany Rielley and other home health nurses from EveryStep Hospice who help the couple manage Danny's deteriorating health. Danny's relationship with EveryStep Hospice only began in recent years, it was a long time in the making.

November 2, 2018 A Story from EveryStep Hospice: Clive Elliott

"You can help him go by telling him, 'It's alright if you have to go for a while. I will still be here.'" This was one of the wisest things that Clive Elliott had ever heard, spoken to him by the hospice care nurses from EveryStep Hospice who were taking care of his partner, Daniel, when he was dying. Clive's heart slowly broke as he saw Daniel lose his health. He had been with Daniel every step of the way, never leaving his side until one day his friend, Lisa, invited Clive out for coffee. Clive, riddled with guilt at the thought of leaving Daniel alone, almost declined Lisa's offer. But Daniel's hospice care nurses insisted he go and they stayed with Daniel. Before Clive left, he whispered the words that the hospice care nurses advised him to say. By the time Clive arrived home again, Daniel had passed away.
