Sandy Cutter: EveryStep Giving Tree Volunteer

With two years under her belt, Sandy Cutter has been able to “try on” lots of different volunteering responsibilities at EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store.

A former librarian with the Waukee School District with a long history of volunteer work, Sandy says she first heard of the store from a former employee. When she realized she had a bit more time to volunteer after retiring, she was quick to seek out an opportunity at EveryStep Giving Tree.

"There are a lot of different opportunities to volunteer here," she says. "You can price clothing, can work in a specialty department like kitchen, you can be flexible." Sandy enjoys finding the tasks that best fit her skills and personality.

On a recent afternoon, Sandy was manning the register, complimenting customers' finds and helping them check out.

"I love that we can repurpose things like clothes and housewares," she says of the store. "It's fun to see people excited about new things they can bring into their homes."

Sandy says not a day goes by when she doesn't hear a customer mention how nice the store is.

"Everyone is complimentary about the store," she notes. "The look is always changing, we're mixing it up. The attention to display detail is incredible, it makes it homey and inviting."

But Sandy says it's not just the fun, welcoming shopping environment that she enjoys, it's knowing that purchases go toward a worthy cause.

EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store helps carry out the EveryStep non-profit mission by directing all proceeds from thrift store sales toward programs and services which benefit EveryStep's patients, clients and their families.
