The Dog Days of Summer with Louie
DES MOINES, IOWA -- Kids will be heading back to school across the state of Iowa in the coming weeks after a long summer break. But there was no break this summer for Louie, EveryStep’s therapy dog in-training. Louie started August by passing a couple of big exams that move him closer to certification.
“Louie had a very big weekend!,” says Annie Harmeyer – Louie's handler and an Executive Assistant at EveryStep, “Louie passed both his American Kennel Club Canine Good Citizen and Advanced Canine Good Citizen (Community Canine) certification tests.”
The titles are recognition of Louie’s good manners and obedience. They are new milestones in his training that prove he will remain well-behaved and a reliable company in various social situations.
“Along with the new titles, Louie also passed his skill test for the Alliance of Therapy Dogs (ATD) therapy dog certification,” says Annie, “We will be completing two additional observations towards the end of August and then Louie will be certified as a therapy dog through ATD.”
It may sound like a lot, but it’s easier to teach a young dog new tricks. “Louie is amazing and has learned so much, but he is still a puppy, and I want to do as much as possible to continue to grow and cement his foundation,” says Annie.
Louie is already putting his skills to work with visits to summer camps organized by EveryStep’s Amanda the Panda. Annie is also working with partners including Principal Financial Group and American Equity to organize a therapeutic visit from Louie to their offices.
Louie is also getting ready for his fall formal – sort of. “Louie will be putting on his very best dress collar to attend Sip, Savor & Support on October 2nd,” says Annie, “We’re so excited to be participating in the event that helped make Louie a reality for EveryStep!”
Away from work and training, Louie has had plenty of time to still be dog this summer.
“Louie has had a pretty great summer, which he kicked off with 10 days with Dr. Mouser and his family, running and playing with his new best buddy, David,” Annie says, “He celebrated his first birthday on July 5 with a cake and lots of his EveryStep friends ... He has had lots of fun at home with his brother Crosby, enjoying walks when it’s not too hot and his new favorite hobby, chasing fireflies at night.”
