Upscale Thrifting Draws Shoppers to Giving Tree

Thrift store shopping is more popular than ever. According to a 2022 report by OfferUp, 82% of Americans buy or sell pre-owned items. Most shoppers are looking for a good deal. Others want their purchases to benefit a good cause. Shoppers at EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store in Urbandale find both.

“It is rewarding to upcycle and help others at the same time,” says Melodi McKeighan of Urbandale, who discovered EveryStep Giving Tree years ago. “I shop frequently with my daughter who loves to go to thrift stores. I always look for glassware to replace broken pieces and we are always on the lookout for something different to decorate our Christmas table at our Advent event.

“My most recent find was a tablecloth runner and gold mesh to decorate our table. The runner was exactly what I was looking for and I had gone to three retail stores earlier to find something without any luck!”

Melodi says her recent trip to EveryStep Giving Tree reminded her of the high-quality clothing the store offers. “It feels like shopping at a boutique store — very organized, clean and welcoming. The clothes are of a much higher quality than many of the other thrift stores and are also more appropriate for a mature woman. I wish I had picked up a raincoat that I saw back in November!”

Items do go quickly at EveryStep Giving Tree and that’s one reason why many shoppers visit frequently, as new merchandise goes to the sales floor daily.

“The staff is very helpful and willing to keep an eye out for an item I’ve told them about,” says Melodi. “I would tell anyone exactly what I told my husband when I came home with my last purchase: this will be the first place I go now to shop, particularly for clothes.” Melodi is also gathering items to donate to EveryStep Giving Tree.
