EveryStep Giving Tree Thrift Store

Friends tell friends about EveryStep Giving Tree thrift store – that could be the motto of Ann Block of Urbandale. “[EveryStep] Giving Tree is a best kept secret, but I have been telling all of my friends because I believe in helping EveryStep and everything it stands for,” says Ann, who originally heard about EveryStep Giving Tree from another bargain-hunting friend about two years ago. Now Ann visits the store at least once a month, sometimes with her husband, Jeoff.

"I love that there is such a great variety of kitchen items, vases, pictures, bedspreads, you name it! The store staff is always wonderful — very caring and diligent in keeping everything looking nice."

From the kitchen to the closet, Ann says her home has many purchases from boutique-style EveryStep Giving Tree, including athletic shirts and shorts/skorts for pickleball, and summer dresses. “One was the exact same dress at a local store in Valley Junction for $59.99. It was $5.99 at Giving Tree!” says Ann, who has also purchased serving platters, napkins, margarita glasses, earrings and shoes at EveryStep Giving Tree. “My husband found some almost new Greg Norman golf shirts for $3.99 and a fun hat he wears while playing in a band. He is hooked, too, and wants to go with me when I go!” When Ann’s father needed new items in assisted living, she was able to purchase a bedspread and some sweatpants for him.

“[EveryStep] Giving Tree isn’t like other thrift stores,” says Ann. “It is bright and airy, and everything is always nicely sorted, clean and ironed. If it isn’t in good shape, you don’t see it on the racks. I love that there is such a great variety of kitchen items, vases, pictures, bedspreads, you name it! The store staff is always wonderful — very caring and diligent in keeping everything looking nice.”

Ann says she visits EveryStep Giving Tree not out of necessity, but for the “thrill of the hunt” and finds joy in discovering random items. “We almost always find something we can use. Ann says as minimalists, she and Jeoff regularly collect items they can donate to EveryStep Giving Tree that someone else can benefit from. “This is a great way to give back in helping this central Iowa organization, while picking up some things we can use as well. We will continue to do what we can to support this organization!”
